Digital Cosmetic Illustration: The Faces of Digital Fantasy Girls By Monte Cohen

A Truth On Beauty: "Beauty is an experience, nothing else. It is not a fixed pattern or an arrangement of features. It is something felt, a glow or a communicated sense of fineness." D. H. Lawrence

Digital Cosmetic Illustration Intro:

"I find this to be perhaps the most fascinating aspect of my art, as I do not know of any other artist who is doing this to the extent that I have. Of course there are digital artists, yet their art is credited as that, and there are also 'touch-up artists' and there are Plastic Surgeons who use some type of more simplistic software to help their clients visualize the end result. Where as this digital cosmetic surgery is performed on a photo. It's a style of art that, at times completely changes almost all of a model's personal characteristics enough that it creates a new identity, the final result may even exceed the most dramatic real life examples of cosmetic plastic surgery. You see the key to the success of this style of art is to disguise the illustrative work as if it were a mere photograph. Therefore it's one of the least rewarding aspects of my art, at least so far as feedback or publicity goes, becuase no one knows that they are looking at an artwork. This style of art I refer to as Digital Cosmetic Illustration or Digital Cosmetic Imaging."

Digital Cosmetic Illustration, My History Developing This Art:

"I began by surpassing routine post-production color (& contrast) corrections, and moving on to correcting other areas of the subjects that I deemed less than ideal, weak, or in need of enhancement. Using Adobe Photoshop, I originally began by correcting the raw digital photographs to a level of minimal acceptance to my eye (and to the eye of the employer) in order to complete the work and move on to the next photo. And believe me, there's often hundreds that need to be corrected, each individually, not batched. That's the life of a freelance digital artist. Over time that level of acceptance became more scrutinized. Meaning that the color and contrast (as well as digital and human imperfections, marks from a dusty camera lens etc.) were not solely corrected, which is typical for most studios or digital artists with a good eye. And by stating human imperfections, I do not necessarily refer to blemishes, pimples, freckles or tattoos on models (though in many cases that is the case), it may also refer to oversights by the photographer or art director such as visible photography equiptment, overhead or other lighting equiptment, power cables or other wires, coffee cups or snacks, or even clocks which may date or put a photo pictorial out of sequence, all within a given raw photograph. As I've stated previously, these types of corrections may be typical for most quality artists and studios."

Digital Cosmetic Illustration, The Fantasy, The Art

"Without becoming too technical in this introduction, let just say that, what I am presenting here is fantasy, not reality. What this art has become is a result of my background in fine art and classic illustration. Had I not been an artist to begin with, these images would never have been possible. The models you'll see in the completed art images do not exist in reality. Though models existed in the raw photographs which is the starting point. And it should be said that the models were plenty beautiful to begin with, and in many cases did not necessarily require the work I put into these images to make them look beautiful. I've gone well beyond correcting a pimple or hiding a tattoo. This process really began for me co-incidentally with my unique abilities as an erotic visual artist by comparing a fantasy female (which as an illustrator/artist I've been drawing for many years), to the actual facial structure of the models in the raw photos I was contracted to correct. It is only when an artist changes, draws or rebuilds, features, distances and diameters of features that simple photographs become more like pin-up works of art, though in most cases viewers are unaware of the extent of work that has gone into the image they are viewing. The end result is the artist's own interpretation of physical beauty, in this case of course, it my perception."

Subsequently, now with my experience creating these new images, I was also becoming an experienced digital makeup artist, self-taught medical anatomist and digital plastic surgeon. The distances between eyes, from the hairline to the eyes, from the eyes to the tip of the nose, from the tip of the nose to the base of the bottom lip, from the base of the mouth to the bottom of the chin, the shape of the head or jaw line, raising/enlarging cheek bone structures, and, believe it or not, thinning of neck, chin and waist lines, thighs, cosmetic-lipo, reshaping butts, and even re-drawing new and more visually pleasing genetailia are some of the un-noticed (by the viewer) details that I've changed, corrected or redrawn from scratch. The amount of work that I've put into each image may vary depending on the distorted perception my mind had directed me to do. I was not paid for this extra work, I did it for myself as an artist. For instance, instead of taking 20 minutes to simply color correct a raw photograph, I was now spending upwards of an hour, 3 hours or 5+ hours per raw photo. That's insane. I know it's hard to make a living doing that, but I also was mesmerized by the results I was achieving. I had no intention from the outset of making the changes I was making, yet, once my mind distinguished a perceived imperfection which I deemed necessary for the fantasy I was presenting, I could not overlook it. Plus I was now perfecting a new art style. And that's where you find me today."

Digital Cosmetic Illustration, What You'll Find Here:

"What you'll find here is a fantasy, these are fantasy girls. Some adult sites present amateur photogrpahy, others present glamour, and artistic erotic photography. The site(s) I've worked for present fantasy, artistic, erotic fantasy. As the majority of my work has been focused upon rendering the female facial structure, I will be presenting to you many cropped versions of the completed original photograph so you may concentrate your attention on the areas of my work, and so as not be distracted by the actions or inactions of the models. Of course, as most artists do, I welcome your feedback (it keeps me better motivated). Remember, real beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and comes from within."
